Born in Italy in 1287, Bl. Margaret of Costello was blind, had a severely curved spine and difficulty walking. Because of her developmental differences, she was shunned by her parents and others in society. Despite her rejection by society, she never grew resentful. Instead, she became known for her deep faith in God and her desire to submit to his will for her life, which included starting a school for children and sharing her Catholic faith. She is a tremendous example of God using the handicapped to proclaim His Kingdom.
In Colossians 3;12, Saint Paul writes, “Therefore clothe yourselves like the elect of God: holy and beloved, with hearts of mercy, kindness, humility, modesty and patience.”
When Youth Ministry volunteers hosted a Valentine’s Day dance for Special Olympics athletes, they were able to follow the example that Margaret set by using their gifts of compassion and kindness.
