Beginnings are important. If we want to know what kind of book we are reading, we skim over the first few pages to see its type. If we want to know what point of view the author takes, we examine how she or he starts out. For these reasons, among others, it is important to recognize the special character of the first five books of the Old Testament, i.e., the Torah, the Law of Moses. They stand apart as an introduction to the entire Bible, and more importantly both the Jewish and Christian faiths recognize them as the foundation on which all of Holy Scripture is built.
